Nigeria’s inflation rate showed significant improvement in January 2026, signaling a slowdown in the pace at which prices are rising across the country.

According to the latest rebased data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), headline inflation dropped sharply compared to the same period last year. While goods and services remain expensive, the rate of increase has moderated considerably.

Food prices recorded the most notable improvement, with month-on-month data indicating that some food items became cheaper in January compared to December.

Core inflation, which measures the cost of goods and services excluding food and energy, also declined.

The overall picture suggests easing price pressures in the economy. However, analysts believe that although inflation is cooling, the general cost of living remains elevated, and sustained stability will be key to delivering meaningful relief to households.
